India bows out of World Cup at Super Six Stage
11th June 1999
By Ravish Mishra & Ajay Chaturvedi

India plays New Zealand in the World Cup Super Six stage on June 12.

With Pakistan defeating Zimbabwe comprehensively today, it has entered the semi-final stage of the tournament and barred India's way to the semi finals. Now, even if India defeats New Zealand by whatever margin, it can not reach the semi finals.

Thus, as far as India is concerned, the June 12 match is only of academic interest and it has been knocked out of the World Cup 1999 at the Super Six Stage.

For New Zealand, the match has some importance. New Zealand can enter the semi final stage by defeating India and acquiring five match points in the process.

It has been the debatable points system adopted in this particular World Cup that has been to India's disadvantage.
Zimbabwe may make it to the semi final stage without winning a single match in the Super Six Stage, on the strength of only 3 victories in the league stage.

In sharp contrast, India, with three victories in the league stage and a possible two in the Super Six will be knocked out.

Worse, both England and West Indies, with three victories in the league stage, did not even make it to the super six.
