Don’t Give Up, India can still make it to super six
20th May 1999
By Ravish Mishra & Ajay Chaturvedi

Indian cricket fans need not give up as yet. India still has a good chance of making it to the super six in the ongoing World Cup Cricket tournament in England.

After the Indian team lost its first two matches, against South Africa and against Zimbabwe, Indian fans must be wondering about India's chances to make it to the super six.

If India wins its remaining three league matches -- against Kenya (May 23), against Sri Lanka (May 26) and against England (May 29), no power on earth can stop it from entering the super six in style. And then, it will be another day, and another league, to qualify for the semi final, the final and taking a shot at lifting the World Cup.

If India, at this stage, wins its match against England and registers another win against either Sri Lanka or Kenya, It will have two wins in five league matches. Even with that meager tally, India will have an outside chance of making it to the super six, depending upon which way the statistical dice falls. Of course, with only two wins, India will have to bank on the bad performance of other contending teams.

If India defeats England, and, at the same time, England, India and Sri Lanka end up with two wins each, it will be the net run rate that will decide which team reaches the super six out of these three. Of course, this assumes that South Africa wins all its five matches and that Zimbabwe wins all its matches except the one against South Africa.
It may be noted that Sri Lanka’s net run rate has suffered a mauling at the hands of South Africa and that India will have the chance to register a comparatively better run rate than England at the May 29 India-England encounter.

Then, the English weather can work as the spoiler, What if the weather intervenes in any team's match against Kenya and the team is forced to share points with Kenya?

Not counting the spoiling potential of the English weather, one can safely say that the India-England match on May 29 will decide which of the two teams will reach the super six. It will not only give India the final chance to collect match points but also the chance to surpass the net run rate of England to storm into the super six.

Of course, if India also wins against Sri Lanka, the match against Kenya being considered a walk over, it will make the entry into the super six a certainty with a simple win against England.

It is being said that Sachin Tendulkar will be available for playing as soon as possible, perhaps, even during the India-Kenya match on Sunday.

So, despite two losses, Tendulkar fans need not give up as yet. India can still bounce back in style.
