India could emerge ‘surprise winner’ of World Cup: Ian Chappell
15th May 1999

Former Australian captain Ian Chappell has predicted that India could emerge as the ‘surprise winner’ of the seventh cricket World Cup.

“‘While South Africa and Australia are favourites, I have a feeling there is going to be a surprise winner and if that is the case it’s most likely to be either India or Pakistan,” Chappell has said.

India could make it to the semifinals at the expense of hosts England who will be weighed down by expectations and a rigid tactical approach, rather than gain from home advantage.

“If India reach the semifinal stage then beware because they possess a match-winning batsman who could turn a game in the time it takes to walk to the bar and get a drink,” the astute former captain said. “If Australia meet India in the semifinals it will be a tough contest for the gold and greens as Sachin Tendulkar has had their measure lately,” he added.
