He has been written off more than dozen times by his detractors but Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar has bounced back each time in the manner he knows best – scoring runs by letting his bat do all the talking. And such is the greatness of the man that he even refuses to acknowledge that he is trying to prove his detractors his wrong. Tendulkar just says modestly that he is just doing his job, that is, guiding his team to victories. His knocks in the last three matches of the just-concluded Tri-Series in Australia were more than enough to prove his critics wrong who said that the Batting Genius doesn’t fire in crunch games. Tendulkar was the second-highest run-getter in the series amassing 399 runs from the 10 innings at an average of 44.33 and an impressive strike rate of 85.25 with a highest score of an unbeaten 117. Earlier in the series, Tendulkar was in patchy form where he often lost his wicket to the new ball after getting a good start, but all that changed in the last league match of the tournament in Hobart when India played Sri Lanka in a must-win game to ensure its place in the finals. Chasing a modest target of 180, India lost Robin Uthappa early to Lasith Malinga. It was then that Tendulkar decided to take charge of the proceedings and played some breathtaking shots in his attacking knock of 63 off 54 balls to ensure there would be no further hiccups. The sheer arrogance of his shots seemed to demoralise the Lankans, and by the time Muttiah Muralitharan dismissed Tendulkar, India were only 60 runs away from victory. But Tendulkar kept his best for the World Champions Australia and scored his first ODI century on Australian soil by amassing 117 runs in the first final at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Tendulkar followed it up with another gem of an innings of 91 in the second final at the Brisbane Cricket Ground. The two knocks laid the foundation for India’s victory in these matches and ensured there would be no need for the third final to be played. And Tendulkar helped India create history, as this was India’s first-ever tournament win in a Tri-Series in Australia. Tendulkar’s match-winning knocks also helped him displace Australian captain Ricky Ponting from the top spot in the ICC’s ODI rankings for batsmen. This was Tendulkar’s first time atop the rankings since August 2004 and it proves that he is still the best and still at the pinnacle of his career. in-depth coverage > Sachin Tendulkar > |
