Pakistan finalise full strength squad for Abu Dhabi
09.20 IST   06th Apr 2006

By Agencies

Pakistan have finalised a strong 14-man squad for the two-match ODI series against India in Abu Dhabi after rejecting a request from some of the players for rest after a gruelling schedule this season.

The team will be officially announced today but it was confirmed that at least two players, whose identity was not disclosed, had requested for a break, complaining of a backbreaking season in which Pakistan has already played eight Tests and 13 one-day internationals since late October.

According to insiders in Karachi, the request has been rejected after both the boards had assured the sponsors and organizers to field the best teams for the matches to be played on April 18 and 19.

The three players, who will not be traveling to Abu Dhabi despite being part of the Pakistan one-day squad in Sri Lanka, are Faisal Iqbal, Umar Gul and uncapped Tahir Khan.

Uncapped left-arm spinner Abdul Rehman has been recalled after being relieved from duty for Tests while Rana Naved, who had to rush from Colombo after his wife had a miscarriage in a freak accident, has also been named in the side.

India defeated Pakistan 4-1 in Pakistan in the recently conclude one-day series in Pakistan and lead England 3-0 in the ongoing series in India.

The likely 14-man squad: Inzamam-ul-Haq (captain), Younis Khan (vice-captain), Salman Butt, Imran Farhat, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Yousuf, Kamran Akmal, Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq, Rana Naved, Mohammad Asif, Rao Iftikhar Anjum, Danish Kaneria and Abdul Rehman.
