Fed up of the ''Inconsiderate and perhaps well planned smear campaign'' launched by former players, Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq has asked his players to avoid reading newspapers during the ongoing one-day series against India.''Some former cricketers have continued to level criticism at our team, just for the sake of it. I have given instructions to my players to avoid reading the newspapers during the series as all they need to do is concentrate on the matches,'' Inzamam wrote in 'The News'. Inzamam said the critical remarks passed by these players have made the public doubtful of the team's abilities. ''Even the cricket enthusiast public has been forced to wonder as to why our performance graph has registered a downward trend,'' he said. The skipper said he had been taken aback by the negative reaction the to team's performance in the ongoing series but would not like to react to any of the criticism levelled against his squad. ''The country seems to have been hit by a deadly hurricane following our defeats against India. Surely, this is not something that has never happened before, but I wouldn’t like to comment on such juvenile statements'' he said. Inzamam said his boys would retaliate to all the criticism by performing well on the field. ''I have told my players to keep themselves focused on the game alone. They should give their response not by retaliating but through their performances out there,'' the skipper said. Away from cricket, the burly Multan player inaugurated a hospital at his hometown and said he was proud of the contribution he made to the welfare of the city. ''It is a small token of gratitude for the love and affection I have received in this city. I am really proud of myself and my place of birth,'' Inzamam said. in-depth coverage > India-Pakistan Series 2006 > |
