Surprised at his selection in the one-day team, right-hander Ian Bell is looking at the upcoming tour of India as an opportunity to make his bid for a place in England's World Cup squad.''I expected the Test match one but didn’t really expect the one-day one so it was a pleasant surprise after not really being involved in one-day cricket in Pakistan,'' Bell told ECB's website. ''If I am given the opportunity then it’s a chance to show people that I can play that form of the game and there’s some big cricket coming up in that form of the game,'' he added. The 23-year-old batsman was selected at the expense of Vikram Solanki inspite of having played just 10 one-day innings since debuting against Zimbabwe in 2004. Speaking of the upcoming tour Bell, who was England's leading run-scorer in Pakistan, was hoping to carry on with his good form. ''Going to Pakistan, originally I probably wasn’t going to start and then through injury I got a game and the tour really went well for me,'' he said. ''Now I’ve got to try and keep that momentum going, see if I can keep the runs up and really cement my place in the Test team.'' Admitting that facing the spinners in the sub-continent was a tough challenge, he said, ‘‘anytime in the Sub-Continent with their spinners, it’s part of the cricket you’re going to play. I’m looking forward to it, it’s going to be a good challenge.'' ''I’m looking forward to facing some world-class spinners and learning from it and becoming a better cricketer,'' an enthusiastic Bell added. Disappointed at the series loss in Pakistan, Bell believes that England are evolving into a good side as the World Cup approaches. ''The guys worked really hard out in Pakistan. It’s a difficult place to go and play cricket but we really did work hard on and off the field to make ourselves better cricketers and to start to gel as a unit for some tough tests coming up with the World Cup and everything in the next year or so.'' in-depth coverage > India-Pakistan Series 2006 > |
