The gastroenteritis infection could not have come a more importune time for Rahul Dravid. The indisposition, by forcing the Indian captain to miss the third and final Test against Sri Lanka that commenced in Ahmedabad today, shattered his dream of becoming the first cricketer ever to play in 100 consecutive Tests from debut. Dravid has played 94 Tests on the trot since his memorable debut at Lord's against England in 1996 and was on his way to reach the coveted 100-mark until the malicious virus caught up with him on Friday. There have been three other players, including Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar, who have played more consecutive Tests than Dravid, but none have done so from debut. Former Australian skipper Allan Border holds the world record for 153 consecutive Test appearances but had a break soon after making his debut against England at Melbourne in 1978-79. His run extended from 1979 till 1994 when he played his last match Test. Border's compatriot Mark Waugh played 107 successive times in Test cricket from 1993 to 2002 after making his debut in 1991. Gavaskar's consecutive run of 106 Tests extended from 1975 till his final bow in 1987 against Pakistan at Bangalore, which is an Indian record, but his debut was earlier in 1971 in the historic triumphant series against the West Indies. Gavaskar's sequence was broken when an injury during a Ranji Trophy tie saw him miss the second Test of the 1974-75 home series against Clive Lloyd's West Indies. in-depth coverage > India-Sri Lanka Test Series 2005 > |
