Indian coach Greg Chappell on Saturday said the team would not sit on the 1-0 lead, but would go out to try and win the third and final Test against Sri Lanka beginning at the Sardar Patel Gujarat stadium, Motera in Ahmedabad from Sunday.Speaking to media persons after the team's practice session, Chappell said the Motera wicket looks like it has runs on it, ''but make no mistake it will be a battle of wits out there in the middle once the game starts.'' The Australian batting legend was happy the way the Indian batsmen tackled ace Lankan spinner Mutiah Muralitharan in the second innings of the Delhi test, which the hosts won by 188 runs. ''We played him well in the second innings because we were much more positive against him than we were in the first innings when we collapsed against him.'' Chappell had a special word of praise for Anil Kumble, who will be playing his 100th test on Sunday, saying the champion leg spinner is one of the greatest bowlers in the game. ''A terrific fighter who, with his control, persistence and consistency, has showed the world what a great bowler he has been and still is.'' Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan side, like the Indians, has also been hit by the flu bug with their two strike bowlers - Chaminda Vaas and Dilhara Fernando - missing practice as they are down with fever. The Sri Lankan captain Marvan Atapattu was also hit by the flu bug but is on the way to recovery. The Lankan coach Tom Moody, putting up a brave face after the Delhi defeat, said his team has not been demoralised by the rout in the second test. ''Though when you see by how many runs we lost it might appear that we were outplayed, but in reality the match was much closer than that.'' ''We still have a lot to play for in this third test, for one squaring the series is the uppermost in our mind and then we have not won a test in India so far and the boys are looking forward to correcting that.'' Speaking about what the team needs to do to avert the batting collapses like one in Delhi, Moody, who is also an Australian, said ''we have to learn from the mistakes we did in the Delhi test and not repeat them.'' ''This is the difference between average teams and great ones as they great ones learn from their mistakes and do not repeat them,'' he said. Mahela Jayawardene admitted the visitors were missing the services of great Sanath Jayasuriya, but said ''this could not be used as an excuse as the young talent, which we have given chances here, have to stand up and be counted''. Jayawardene also doffed his hat off to Kumble, stating that the highest Indian wicket taker is the best Indian bowler at the moment. in-depth coverage > India-Sri Lanka Test Series 2005 > |
