Before their third Test against the visitors Sri Lanka on Sunday, the Indian team’s skipper Rahul Dravid has taken ill with gastroenteritis. Virender Sehwag will now lead the team in the series-deciding Test at Ahmedabad’s Motera stadium. It would be a setback for team India as captain Rahul Dravid was today ruled out from the third cricket Test. In his place, vice-captain Virender Sehwag will act as captain as India, 1-0 ahead in the three match series, look to end their campaign on a winning note. Incidentally, Sehwag missed the second Test in his hometown of Delhi with a viral infection. Mumbai opener Wasim Jaffer and Uttar Pradesh middle order batsman Mohammad Kaif were named in the 12 to play on Sunday. Sourav Ganguly has been left out. The 12-member Indian team for the third Test would be: Virender Sehwag (captain), Gautam Gambhir, Wasim Jaffer, Sachin Tendulkar, V V S Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Irfan Pathan, Ajit Agarkar, Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh. The Test would also make bowler Anil Kumble the fifth Indian to play 100 Tests in the country's 73-year Test history. In fact, it is due to Kumble's eighth 10-wicket haul and Sachin Tendulkar 's century in the second match in New Delhi this week that team India are presently leading this series. A win over the Lankans will enable India climb up to an unprecedented second spot in the ICC Test championship ranking. An Indian win in this Test would also mean their fifth series victory over Sri Lanka since the two countries started playing Test matches in 1982. Lankans, on the other hand, still appear to be reeling from their crushing 1-6 defeat to India in one-day series in October-November. Sri Lankan team for the Ahmedabad Test would be: Marvan Atapattu (captain), Kumara Sangakkara (vice-captain/wicket-keeper), Mahela Jayawardene, Avishka Gunawardene, Thilan Samaraweera, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Upul Tharanga, Farveez Maharoof, Dilhara Fernando, Chaminda Vaas, Muttiah Muralitharan, Lasith Malinga, Sajeewa Weerakoon, Malinga Bandara and Jehan Mubarak. in-depth coverage > India-Sri Lanka Test Series 2005 > |
