Ganguly meets Dalmiya
23.20 IST   15th Dec 2005

By Agencies

A day after being sacked from the Indian Test squad, Sourav Ganguly today called on former board chief Jagmohan Dalmiya and got the assurance that the Cricket Association of Bengal would stand by him in his hour of crisis.

"He came to my office and was there for half an hour. I told Sourav CAB will stand by him," Dalmiya, the president of CAB, said in Kolkata.

The seasoned cricket administrator said he had also told Ganguly not to be despondent and continue playing the game.

"Injustice has been done to him. He seemed disappointed. So, I tried to boost his morale," he said.

Dalmiya said Ganguly would not be available for Bengal's Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka beginning December 17, but would be part of the squad for the next match versus Gujarat from December 27.

Though Dalmiya refused to join issue with the ruling group in the BCCI over Ganguly's ouster, sources close to him dismissed as 'ridiculous' board chief Sharad Pawar's statement that he was "hurt and shocked" over the decision.

"The powers-that-be in the board are speaking in different voices. Somebody says that he is hurt and shocked, but does not announce any corrective measure," the sources said.

Meanwhile, Ganguly spent a quiet day at his residence, refusing to speak to the media.

But one of his associates said that the cricketer was confident of making his way back into the team.

"He wants to wait till the announcement of the side for the Pakistan tour. But he believes that street protests will not ensure his return to the Indian team," he said.
