India and Pakistan cricket boards on Sunday decided to call off the six-nation Asia Cup, which was to be held from February 16-28 in Pakistan, and to hold cricket series between the arch rivals on the immensely popular Ashes model. After a meeting, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sharad Pawar and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Shaharyar Khan decided to hold the Asia Cup at a mutually convenient date later. The BCCI had requested for postponement of the Asia Cup due to its tight cricketing schedule. Khan was in Mumbai to meet and congratulate Pawar on being elected the new BCCI President. The two had a long discussion, which resulted in ironing out a few sore points between the two boards, Pawar told reporters after the meeting. In a meeting described as ''cordial'' by Pawar, the two chiefs decided to hold the India-Pakistan series on the basis of the Ashes where there will be a series after every two years, a move that would generate enthusiasm among the cricket fans and also boost revenues. They also finalised the itinerary of India's tour to Pakistan in January next year. Lahore, Karachi, Multan, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad and Peshawar would hold Tests and one-dayers. However, the exact details of the itinerary would be decided soon, Pawar said. Providing another fillip to bilateral cricketing relations, the BCCI and PCB decided to start a tournament, which will pit the Indian Ranji Trophy champions against the Qaid-e-Azam trophy winners of Pakistan, Pawar said. The championship would be held alternately every year in the two countries and the dates would be decided soon, the BCCI chief said. in-depth coverage > India-Pakistan Cricket Series 2005 > |
