Former Indian captain Dilip Vengsarkar on Wednesday said he was against split captaincy for the national team, and that Rahul Dravid should be allowed to lead the team in Test matches as well.

“In the current scenario, Dravid should be persisted with as captain in both forms of the game,” Vengsarkar said when asked whether India should have separate skippers for ODIs and Tests.

The former stylish batsman felt that Sourav Ganguly had it in him to bounce back into the team.

“I believe he has the potential to come back. He is fit. If he can prove himself, he can certainly be back,” he said.

Expressing satisfaction at the performance of youngsters in the current series against Sri Lanka, Vengsarkar mentioned the names of Irfan Pathan, S. Sreesanth and R.P. Singh.

Vengsarkar, the chairman of the BCCI’s Talent Resourced Development Wing, said that the role played by the National Cricket Academy and the Talent Resource Development Officers (TRDO) had started bearing fruit.

Vengsarkar said with coach Greg Chappell’s emphasis on taking in young blood, the coordination between the senior and junior national committees had increased.
