Sri Lanka denied India a clean sweep by winning the fifth one-dayer at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad on November 6.Sri Lanka beat India by five wickets to register their first win in the series, which has already been won by India. The Lankans achieved the victory target of 286 runs in 47.4 overs with Tillekeratne Dilshan (81) and Russel Arnold (49) adding a record 131 runs for the sixth wicket. Dilshan and Arnold came together when their team was tottering at 155/5 and the Indian bowlers were threatening to get their team back in the game. But Dilshan and Arnold kept their cool and saw their team to victory. The Indians went into the match without their key players -- Sachin Tendulkar, Irfan Pathan and Harbhajan Singh all of whom were rested for the inconsequential tie. But the Lankans got off to a bad start when Ajit Agarkar had Sanath Jayasuriya (8) caught at first slip by Venugopal Rao. Agarkar struck again the thirteenth over when he had Upul Tharanga (14) caught at mid-off by Virender Sehwag. In the seventeenth over, Rao took another catch, this time a juggling effort to send Kumar Sangakkara (39) back to the pavilion off the bowling of R P Singh. Lankan skipper Marvan Atapattu scored 39 runs off 38 balls before he gave a simple return catch to Murali Kartik in the twenty eighth over. In the thirtieth over, J P Yadav ran out Mahela Jayawardene (37) with a direct hit and it was then that Dilshan and Arnold came together at the crease. Earlier, Gautam Gambhir's maiden one-day hundred, combined with a fighting unbeaten 103 by skipper Dravid, helped India overcome a middle-order collapse and post a challenging 285/8 in their 50 overs after Atapattu won the toss and elected to bowl first. Gambhir, playing in his first ODI in two and a half years, celebrated his return to the team with a rollicking knock of 103 but the team needed a stellar performance from Dravid to set the visitors a stiff target. After combining with Gambhir for a crucial fourth-wicket stand of 128 runs, Dravid saw the team through a damaging spell of fast bowling by Super Sub Farveez Maharoof towards the closing stages. Maharoof grabbed a career best 4/20 as he drove a wedge through the lower order to restrict the Indian juggernaut to some extent. Dravid brought up his 11th hundred with a majestic pull off Dilhara Fernando off the penultimate ball of the innings, his late flourish fetching India 50 runs from the last five overs. This is Dravid's highest score as captain. Gambhir, getting a nod for the first time in the seven-match series, set up the foundation with an enterprising knock that came off 97 balls and contained 13 fours and a six. He reached his hundred off 93 balls and has two scores in the 90s in Test cricket Dilshan was adjudged the Man of the Match and the two teams now head to Rajkot for the sixth ODI on Wednesday. -With inputs from agencies. in-depth coverage > India-Sri Lanka Series 2005 > |
