Dalmiya counters Bindra's charges
20.42 IST   05th Nov 2005

Former BCCI chief Jagmohan Dalmiya today rubbished the allegation that he had masterminded the exit of Sourav Ganguly and launched a counter attack instead, saying IS Bindra's charges were aimed at maligning him and disrupting the former Indian captain's focus.

"Ganguly is now in CCI (Mumbai) to play and what better way to disrupt his concentration and focus. That's the reason for the postings in the Punjab Cricket Association's website," Dalmiya said at a press conference in Kolkata.

The CCI is headquartered at the Brabourne Stadium, which is the home stretch of Raj Singh Dungarpur, a leading figure in the anti-Dalmiya camp in the Board. Ganguly is currently playing in the Duleep Trophy for East Zone at the Brabourne Stadium.

"It's unfortunate that players and coaches are being dragged into the election campaign ahead of the BCCI elections," Dalmiya said.

Maintaining that throughout his long career as a cricket administrator, he had stood by Indian players, coaches and umpires irrespective of which part of the country they belonged to, Dalmiya said "whatever he (Bindra) has said is a lie. The only truth is that coach Chappell had sent an e-mail".

In a write-up posted on Punjab Cricket Association's website, Bindra has accused Dalmiya of masterminding Ganguly's ouster from the team for his own political survival.

Bindra said he thought it necessary to throw more light on the "sinister campaign" leading to the dethroning of Ganguly after it was suggested to him that the Pawar faction was behind the Bengal cricketer's present predicament.

In the write-up, Bindra has given a detailed account of the events leading to the ouster of Ganguly while scotching suggestions that the anti-Dalmiya faction had anything to do with the entire episode.

"... Ganguly's present predicament and trauma have nothing to do with the equations in the Board. He has unwittingly been dragged into the unsavoury happenings in Kolkata Cricket... That's how my friend (Dalmiya) from Calcutta plays his politics. He is prepared to sacrifice even his near and dear for his political survival," the PCA chief says.

"It is common knowledge that four out of five selectors report to Kolkata for instructions. Even Sourav may not believe the preposterous story that he's the victim of Board politics. It is apparent as to who is calling the shots and if he looks back and pieces together the advice he got from various people, he can track down the real culprit responsible for his present misery."
