Jadeja bats for Ganguly

Former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja on Saturday described as "unfair" the treatment meted out to former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly.

"It's sad to see a great player being treated like this. The treatment meted out to Ganguly is, indeed, unfair," said Jadeja.

"He has served Indian cricket for too long to be treated thus. I am not saying that just because he is a great player, he deserves a place lifelong in the team. But then things could have been done in a different way," Jadeja, in Kolkata on an invitation from a private television company, said.

Asked whether Ganguly could make a comeback to the Indian team, Jadeja said, "It's for the selectors to decide. I can't comment on it".

Praising the Indian team for its excellent run of wins against Sri Lanka, he said, "their performance has been great indeed." However, it was "too early" to give the credit to new coach Greg Chappell and skipper Rahul Dravid for the turnaround in the team's performance, he said.

"Cricket is a game, where the mere appointment of a new coach and captain cannot automatically change the performance of a team overnight. While the performance of the Indian team is praiseworthy, the real cause can only be speculated upon.

It is only at a later stage that we will be able to pin-point the real cause emphatically," he said.

Asked how he rated Greg Chappell as a coach, Jadeja said, "I have always thought that he is the best in the business. He is a master in the science of cricket and the way he does his coaching is really something."
