Gavaskar's participation in BCCI meet uncertain
11.25 IST   27th Sept 2005

By Agencies

The participation of former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar in today's review committee meeting of the Cricket Board is uncertain due to his father's illness.

"Gavaskar, who is scheduled to leave for Australia this evening, is trying to put off his departure to tomorrow morning. In case he succeeds, he would be able to attend the BCCI review committee meeting," a source very close to the cricket legend said.

The review committee will discuss the much-publicised spat between captain Sourav Ganguly and coach Greg Chappell. The coach's "leaked" confidential e-mail to the Board President, in which he has levelled serious charges against Ganguly, would also be taken up for discussion.

Earlier, the source had said that Gavaskar was proceeding to Pune to meet his father, who has been admitted to a hospital there.

"In case he (Gavaskar) manages to change his flight plans, he would attend the meeting, proceed to Pune to see his father and then take the early morning flight to Australia for the ICC Super Series," the source said.

Gavaskar is the Chairman of the International Cricket Council's Cricket Committee (Playing) and is also the head of the ICC's selection committee for the Rest of World teams, which would take on Australia in the Super Series.

But BCCI officials were unaware of Gavaskar’s uncertainty to attend the meeting.

"I have not heard anything from Gavaskar that he will not be attending the meeting so far," Board Secretary and meeting Convenor S K Nair said this morning.

The BCCI executive secretary in-charge Ratnakar Shetty also said he was not aware of the development.

Gavaskar, however, was not available for comments.

The review committee -- comprising board president Ranbir Singh Mahendra (chairman), former BCCI chief Jagmohan Dalmiya, Nair, Gavaskar and two former Indian cricketers Ravi Shashtri and Srinivas Venkataraghavan -- is also scheduled to discuss the Indian team's performance in the recent tours to Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.
