Left arm seamer Irfan Pathan took five wickets again to spearhead a big Indian win over Zimbabwe on the third day of the second Test at the Harare Sports Club in Harare on September 22.India beat Zimbabwe by 10 wickets to win the Test series 2-0 and register their first 10-wicket win away from home. The day’s play started with the hosts resuming their second innings trailing the Indian score by 166 runs. Zaheer struck on the third ball of the day when he had Heath Streak caught by VVS Laxman at second slip for 8. Charles Coventry swung his bat at everything and scored 25 runs off 24 balls with six fours before Pathan’s slower ball deceived him and he gave Sourav Ganguly a simple catch at mid-on. India were deprived of an innings win by a record 116-run partnership for the seventh wicket between Hamilton Masakadza and Andy Blignaut. India’s sloppy fielding made things easier for the hosts. Blignaut was dropped thrice on three consecutive deliveries in a Zaheer Khan over (by substitute Dheeraj Jadhav at second slip, Virender Sehwag at third slip and wicket keeper Dinesh Kaarthick) and later by Laxman at second slip. But Pathan struck twice in an over soon after Lunch to dismiss Masakadza (71) plumb in front of the wicket and then had Keith Dabengwa (0) caught behind by Kaarthick. In the next over, Anil Kumble trapped Blessing Mahwire (0) plumb in front of the wicket to reduce Zimbabwe to 202/9. Blignaut on the other end played some big shots scoring 84 runs off 93 balls with eight fours and four sixes and it was due to him that Zimbabwe overhauled the Indian score. Zaheer took the last Zimbabwean wicket dismissing Waddington Mwayenga (1) leg before wicket as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 223 runs in their second innings, leading the Indian score by 18 runs. The required 19 runs were scored by Gautam Gambhir (1), Sehwag (14) and 4 byes in 2.2 overs. Pathan was adjudged the Man of the Match for taking 12 wickets in the match (7/59 and 5/67) and the Man of the Series for taking 21 wickets. in-depth coverage > India in Zimbabwe 2005 > |
