I plan to be an opener: Streak

Zimbabwe’s leading all-rounder Heath Streak on Wednesday said the frequent top order collapses of his side were forcing him to almost play the role of an opening batsman.

"Most of the time I am in when Irfan and Zaheer still have the new ball in their hands," Streak said before adding, probably in a lighter vein, "I am getting trained to be a good opening batsman."

Streak, who took six Indian wickets in the first innings, had to witness another Zimbabwean top order failure as the first four wickets fell with only 21 runs on the board forcing the all-rounder to return to the field with bat in hand.

Talking about Zimbabwe's bowling, he said the side had been disappointed with its first day's efforts and were determined to put up a better show.

"We had much better plans today and kept up the pressure with positive field settings and bowling to one side of the wicket," Streak said.

He also complimented his fellow bowlers Mahwire, Mwayenga and Blignaut for their support.

Zimbabwe, who trail by a further 166 runs with six second innings wickets in hand, have a huge task to stay alive in the game tomorrow.

"We have to get through the new ball tomorrow and bat positively from there," Streak said.
