If everyone thought that India would run amok and embark on a run feast on the second day of the second Test at Harare, then they were wrong. But the Zimbabwean batsmen faltered again to hand the advantage back to India. After bowling out India for 366 runs in their first innings, the Zimbabwean batting collapsed again with Irfan Pathan and Zaheer Khan taking two wickets each to have the hosts reeling at 39/4 at Stumps on Day Two. The day’s play started with India resuming their first innings at the overnight score of 195/1 with Gautam Gambhir on 95 and Rahul Dravid on 49. Dravid reached his fifty, but Gambhir failed to reach his hundred falling to Blessing Mahwire caught behind by Tatenda Taibu. Gambhir scored 97 runs with 17 fours. Both last Test centurions failed with the bat. VVS Laxman fell leg before wicket to Heath Streak after scoring 8 runs and Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly scored 16 runs before he was caught by Taibu to become the first Test wicket of Waddington Mwayenga. The Zimbabwean fast bowlers today bowled superbly. They hardly gave the Indians any room to play their shots and so impressive was their display that throughout the Indian innings on Day Two, skipper Taibu did not use any spinner. Southpaw Yuvraj Singh, selected over Mohammad Kaif, disappointed with the bat again as he was clean bowled from behind his legs by Streak with the second new ball. Yuvraj scored 25 runs. In the next over, Mahwire shattered the stumps of Dravid with a scorching yorker. Dravid, trying to play the full-length delivery to mid-on, played all over it, missed it and was out after scoring 98 runs. This is the eighth time that Dravid has been out in the 90s. Hitting 14 fours, Dravid top scored for India. Streak struck again when he had Dinesh Kaarthick (1) edge a ball onto his stumps. Streak completed his seventh five-wicket haul when he had Anil Kumble (8) caught at first slip by Dion Ebrahim. Streak then had Pathan (32) caught at deep square leg by Charles Coventry to take his sixth wicket and register his career best figures and the best bowling figures by an Zimbabwean bowler against India. Streak finished with superb bowling figures of 6/73. Andy Blignaut took the last Indian wicket, that of Zaheer (2) caught behind by Taibu. Harbhajan Singh remained not out on 14 as India were bowled out 366 runs with a lead of 205 runs. This Indian score was far less than anybody had expected and all the credit should go to the Zimbabweans bowlers. But the hosts’ batsmen let go off that advantage as they crumbled again against the pace of Pathan and Zaheer in the second innings. Pathan struck in his third over when he had Terrence Duffin (10) caught at first slip by Dravid and then again in his next over trapping Brendan Taylor (4) plumb in front of the wicket. Zaheer too then struck in successive overs. First Yuvraj took a good catch at backward point to his left to dismiss Dion Ebrahim (3) and then Kumble took a good low catch at gully to send skipper Taibu (1) back to the pavilion. At close of play on Day Two, Zimbabwe still trailed the Indians by 166 runs. If only the hosts’ batsmen had batted as well as their bowlers had bowled then who knows there would have been a match on. in-depth coverage > India in Zimbabwe 2005 > |
