Pathan wrecks Zimbabwe at Harare
22.40 IST   20th Sept 2005

By Manish Kumar

Left-arm seamer Irfan Pathan took seven wickets to wreck Zimbabwe on the first day of the second Test at the Harare Sports Club in Harare on September 20.

Pathan registered his career best figures of 7/59 as Zimbabwe were bundled out for 161 runs in their first innings after being put into bat by Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly.

Pathan first struck on the third ball of the match having Brendan Taylor (4) caught at first slip by Rahul Dravid.

Pathan got his second wicket when in the eleventh over, VVS Laxman standing at second slip took a good catch in front of first slip to dismiss Terrence Duffin (12).

In the same over, Pathan had Zimbabwean skipper Tatenda Taibu (0) caught behind by Dinesh Karthik to reduce Zimbabwe to 31/3.

Pathan‘s new ball partner Zaheer Khan struck next when he had Dion Ebrahim (14) caught brilliantly by a diving Karthik.

Offie Harbhajan Singh then had Heath Streak (14) caught at forward short leg by Gautam Gambhir and Zimbabwe went to Lunch at 75/5.

After Lunch, Pathan bowled unchanged to nail the hosts. Pathan struck in his very first over after lunch when Hamilton Masakadza (27) was declared leg-before-wicket.

Pathan then had Andy Blignaut (13) caught behind by Karthik and then Harbhajan dismissed Charles Coventry (37) caught by Dravid while running towards third man to reduce the hosts to 136/8.

Pathan took the remaining two wickets of Blessing Mahwire (lbw for 1) and Keith Dabengwa (caught at second slip by Laxman for 18) to bowl out Zimbabwe for 161 runs in just 44.2 overs.

After Pathan’s superb bowling display, Gambhir took the centrestage with a rollicking unbeaten 95 as India reached 195/1 at close on the opening day, taking a lead of 34 runs with nine wickets in hand.

Dravid was giving Gambhir company on 49 and the two have already added 120 runs for the second wicket.

Opener Virender Sehwag scored run-a-ball 44 (with seven fours) before he was caught behind by Taibu off Streak.

India were unchanged from the first Test with both spinners, Harbhajan and Anil Kumble, in the squad, while Zimbabwe made one change to their team bringing Waddington Mwayenga in place of Gavin Ewing.
