Sourav is captain courageous: Mahendra

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Ranbir Singh Mahendra rallied the board’s support behind Sourav Ganguly saying that the captain should strive for a comeback.

Talking to reporters in New Delhi, Mahendra described the ban on Ganguly as “too harsh.”

Asked if the Board was thinking of pursuing Ganguly's case after the Indian captain was handed a six-match ban, Mahendra did not make it clear and said, ''We will go by the book.'' Mahendra added, ''The Board is with Sourav. He is a brave player and our captain courageous. He should strive for a comeback and we are with him.''

The BCCI will not dilly-dally about selecting a new coach and will announce a committee within the next two days, which will pick John Wright's successor, Mahendra said.

The BCCI chief refuted that the Board was dragging its feet over finding a new coach after Wright quit the post.

''There has been no delay and within the next 48 hours, we will form a committee which would pick the next coach,'' he said.

He, however, refused to reveal the name and number of the committee members.

Asked if the Board was thinking of going for an Indian coach or roping in someone from abroad, Mahendra said, ''I can't say whether he will be an Indian or a foreigner. All would depend on the committee and they would pick the right person for the job.''

Reminded that Wright was not very happy with the selection process, Mahendra said, ''I read it in the media but Wright did not tell us anything. Anyway, I was keen on having his opinion regarding the entire thing but unfortunately could not meet him.''
