Personally-autographed shirts by cricketers and a silver coin that will be used for the toss by Australian Prime Minister John Howard in the tsunami relief match being played in Melbourne on Monday will be auctioned to fetch more funds for the affected people. The day-night match will be played between a World XI, led by Ricky Ponting, and the Sourav Ganguly-led Asia XI at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and has been given the official One-Day International status by the International Cricket Council (ICC). "Signed, match-worn shirts from every player involved in the World Cricket Tsunami Relief match and the coin tossed by Australian Prime Minister John Howard will be auctioned online, with all proceeds going to World Vision's tsunami relief fund," the Australian cricket board announced on Saturday. Being run in conjunction with online auction specialists eBay, the auctions began on Saturday and will conclude on Tuesday. Sold as separate lots, the auctions are open to bidders in any part of the world. "The shirts will be match-worn, personally signed and un-mounted, packaged with a Cricket Australia (CA) letter of authenticity," said CA in a statement. "The coin used to start the match is a 40mm pure silver-proof dollar coin from the Royal Australian Mint's 'Masterpieces in Silver 2004' limited edition set, and will be auctioned with an additional mint condition 'Masterpieces in Silver' set," it said. Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland applauded the initiative. "The generosity and good will surrounding this match has extended to the players literally giving us the shirts off their backs, and we thank them and the Royal Australian Mint for providing a way for cricket fans throughout the world to get involved in raising funds through this match," he said. "We hope that cricket fans from all points of the globe log on and help cricket's efforts to raise money for World Vision." in-depth coverage > ICC Charity Cricket Match > |
