By picking 74 wickets in the 12 Tests he played in the calendar year 2004, Anil Kumble showed that he still has enough fire in him to perform at the top level.Kumble clearly emerged as the top bowler for India taking 74 wickets in 12 Test matches at an average of 24.83, his best performance being 8/141 against Australia in their first innings in Sydney in January 2004. Australia had to fight hard to draw that Test and it was the best performance by an Indian bowler in Test cricket in 2004. Kumble took 12 wickets in the Test. Kumble took six five-wicket hauls and two ten-wicket hauls in the year 2004 and also holds the second-best performance by an Indian – 7/48 again against Australia in their first innings in the Chennai Test in October 2004. Kumble took 13 wickets in the Test but rain washed off India’s chances of a likely victory. Ace off-spinner Harbhajan Singh takes the honours for the third-best bowling performance by an Indian in the year 2004. In the second Test against South Africa in Kolkata in November-December’ 04, Harbhajan ripped through the South African batting line-up in their second innings taking 7/87, as India won the Test by 8 wickets. India’s latest bowling sensation Irfan Pathan holds the fourth spot in the best bowling performance for the country in the year 2004. In the first Test against Bangladesh at Dhaka in December, Pathan took his maiden five-wicket haul in the first innings. But it is his second innings’ effort of 6/51 that is the fourth-best bowling performance by an Indian bowler. India won the Test by an innings and 140 runs Kumble returns to take the fifth spot of the best Indian bowling performance for the year 2004 – against Pakistan in the first Test in Multan in March-April’04. The leg spinner took 6/72 in Pakistan’s second innings as India won the Test by an innings and 52 runs. Pathan and Harbhajan played nine and seven Tests respectively in the year 2004 and both took 38 wickets. While Harbhajan took four five-wicket hauls, Pathan took three and both the bowlers took one ten-wicket haul each. in-depth coverage > 2004 - The Year That Was > |
