The Indian cricket squad, led by Sourav Ganguly, Tuesday returned home after a successful 20-day tour of Bangladesh amidst chaotic scenes at the NSC Bose International Airport in Kolkata. The cricketers, who disembarked from an Indian Airlines flight, had a trying time in getting out of the international terminal as a large number of overenthusiastic onlookers jammed the exit route. Security personnel had to literally jostle with onlookers, who shouted slogans eulogising the cricketers, to clear the way for the players even as media personnel were hard put to do their job. Local hero Ganguly was the most inconvenienced. His first effort to come out of the airport proved futile as he was hemmed in by mediapersons and onlookers, forcing the securitymen to take him back inside the terminal building. Ganguly had to be led out through a separate door and bundled into his car by police commandos who shoved mediapersons aside. Even as desperate electronic media personnel made a last ditch attempt to get his byte, the car sped off towards Ganguly's residence in South Kolkata. What came as a sort of comic relief was a scribe's full-throated shout "Sourav, Quake! Sourav Quake!". He was apparently trying to elicit some comments from Ganguly about the disaster caused by the killer tsunami in India. The other team members managed to somehow sneak out of the international terminal and enter the domestic terminal to take connecting flights to their respective destinations. India won the two-Test series 2-0 and triumphed 2-1 in the limited over series in Bangladesh. in-depth coverage > Indian Cricket Team's Bangladesh Tour > |
