A wounded, resurgent India recovering from Sunday’s shock defeat against Bangladesh to play like champions and thrash the hosts by 91 runs to win the third match of the one-day series at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka.Chasing a huge victory target of 349 runs, Bangladesh managed to score 257/9 in their 50 overs. With this win, India take the series 2-1. Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar picked up four wickets, conceding 54 runs in nine overs, while fast bowler Ajit Agarkar picked up two wickets. Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan picked up a wicket each. Chasing a mammoth total of 348, Bangladesh kept the pace going, even though they lost wickets at regular intervals. Opener Rajin Saleh hit a defiant 82 even while wickets fell around him. Bangladesh pacer Mashrafe Mortaza entertained the crowd with a superb knock of 39, sending Virender Sehwag and Sachin to the boundary in the last two overs. In the 34th over, Sachin got rid of Saleh and soon after Khaled Mahmud followed suit as India tightened its grip over the match. In the 30th over, the hosts suffered another setback when Harbhajan got Aftab Ahmed's wicket. Chasing a massive Indian total of 348, the only Bangladeshi batsmen to face the Indian attack were Saleh and Ashraful. Indian new ball bowlers Agarkar and Zaheer Khan checked Bangladesh's good start with two wickets in successive overs. Opener Nafis Iqbal (10) was the first to depart when he edged a delivery from Agarkar to Mahendra Dhoni behind the stumps in the seventh over. Later, captain Habibul Bashar (2) perished in an almost carbon-copy fashion. Zaheer had Mohammad Rafique caught by Rahul Dravid at first slip in the next over for a duck. Earlier, Four batsmen struck half-centuries as India made amends for their shock loss to Bangladesh on Sunday by piling up 348/5. Sehwag slammed an explosive 70, Dravid hit a breezy 60, Ganguly added 55 and Yuvraj Singh blasted a flawless 32-ball 69 as the visitors racked up the runs on a good batting surface. India, who won the series opener by 11 runs in Chittagong, lost to Bangladesh by 15 runs on Sunday after being dismissed for a paltry 214. In the series decider, however, they launched their assault in the second over when Sehwag cut Hasibul Hossain to the cover boundary. Sachin followed suit, punishing Hossain and medium-pacer Mushfiqur Rahman for three fours apiece in successive overs before Sehwag reached his 50 from just 36 balls with consecutive boundaries. The opening stand was worth 106 when Sachin fell for 47, caught behind while trying to cut seamer Khaled Mahmud. The same bowler struck again soon after when Sehwag was caught at long-on. The scoring rate slowed after the openers departed, but Ganguly and Dravid hit some lusty blows after settling down and went on to share in a stand of 98 for the third wicket. Ganguly smashed two sixes in his 59th half-century and was caught off Rajin Saleh while going for a third. Dravid became the year's highest run-scorer in One-Day Internationals, eclipsing Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara, before he was caught at mid-off after giving the charge to left-arm spinner Mohammad Rafique. It then seemed India would struggle to reach 300 but Yuvraj had other ideas. He played an array of audacious shots, including a flicked six over mid-wicket from outside off-stump, as the visitors plundered 99 in the last eight overs. Yuvraj reached his 17th half-century in just 22 balls, hitting eight fours and three sixes in all. Kaif was the perfect foil in a 93-run stand for the fifth wicket, scoring 29 off 24 deliveries. Sehwag was adjudged the Man of the Match, while Kaif was chosen the Man of the Series. in-depth coverage > Indian Cricket Team's Bangladesh Tour > |
