Dismissing suggestions that pace sensation Irfan Pathan was being overbowled, Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly on Monday said every bowler has to respond to the team's needs and the youngster had it in him to take the workload."It is still early part of his career and he is still young. As a fast bowler, you have to bowl 20-25 overs each day of a Test match," Ganguly said at the post-match press conference in Chittagong after India scripted an innings and 83 runs victory in the second Test against Bangladesh. "Also, every bowler has to respond to the situation of the match and the team's needs, and give his best within the restrictions and limitations," he added. In the two Tests against Bangladesh, Pathan picked up 18 wickets including three five-wicket hauls to set up India's victory on each occasion and win the man of the series award. The left-arm fast bowler showed abundant reserves of energy to bowl long spells whenever his captain threw the ball at him. In the second Test, during the last phase of Bangladesh’s first innings and the start of their second innings, Pathan bowled 14 overs on a trot and took seven wickets. Bangladesh coach Dave Whatmore said he was disappointed that the team crashed in the second innings after a good show in the first but added that it was Pathan who made all the difference. "Resisting the new ball was important. We did that in the first innings, but did not do it in the second. Having said that, the difference was the man of the series." in-depth coverage > Indian Cricket Team's Bangladesh Tour > |
