India complete series clean-sweep
09.40 IST   20th Dec 2004

By Manish Kumar

It took just four balls from Harbhajan Singh on Day Four to register an emphatic Indian victory against Bangladesh in the second Test at MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong on December 20.

It all ended as soon as it began as India won the Chittagong Test by an innings and 83 runs, to pocket the series 2-0.

Harbhajan’s second ball of the day was lifted over the long-on fence for a six by Talha Jubair, but the ‘Turbanator’ had his revenge on his fourth delivery having Jubair (31) caught at the long-on fence by Irfan Pathan.

Debutant Nazmul Hossain didn’t get to face a single delivery on Day Four as Bangladesh were bowled out for 124 runs in their second essay.

Mohammad Ashraful was adjudged the Man of the Match for his sizzling century in the first innings, while Pathan was declared the Man of the Series.

Some records have taken a beating in this two-Test series against Bangladesh.

Leg-spinner Anil Kumble became the highest wicket taker for India in Test cricket, Sachin Tendulkar joined Sunil Gavaskar at the top of the batting summit by becoming only the second player in history to hit 34 centuries in Test cricket. Sachin also became only the third player after Steve Waugh and Gary Kirsten to hit tons against all Test playing nations.

Pathan registered his first five-five wicket haul, that is of course not a record but a five-wicket haul is equivalent to a century in Test cricket. Pathan also had three chances to claim a hat-trick in this series. Opener Gautam Gambhir hit his maiden Test century.

Indian vice-captain Rahul Dravid became the first player in the history of Test cricket to score a century in every Test-playing country, Sourav Ganguly became the highest run scoring Indian skipper abroad and Zaheer Khan completed 100 wickets in Test cricket.

Nothing should be taken away from these feats saying that they come against Bangladesh. The fact is that these players just completed their records against the minnows.

The one-day series starts from Thursday.
