Left arm fast bowler Irfan Pathan ran through the Bangladeshi batting line-up taking his third five-wicket haul as India reached on the verge of completing another big win against the hosts on the third day of the second Test at MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong on December 19.Following-on after being dismissed for 333 runs in their first innings, Bangladesh were grounded to dust at 118/9 when bad light stopped play on Day Three. But things were not so gloomy for the hosts when they resumed their first innings at the overnight score of 54/3 with Habibul Bashar and Mohammad Ashraful. The Bangladeshi skipper and his most talented batsman added 70 runs for the fourth wicket before Anil Kumble had Bashar (22) stumped by Dinesh Karthik. Ashraful added 115 runs for the fifth wicket with Aftab Ahmed who scored 43 runs. It was Kumble again who made the much-needed breakthrough when he dismissed Ahmed trapping him plumb in front of the wicket for 43. Zaheer Khan took the 100th wicket of his Test career in the next over, when he dismissed Manjural Islam Rana leg before wicket for a duck. Khan then had the hosts’ wicket keeper Khaled Mashud (22) caught behind by Karthik to reduce Bangladesh to 300/7. Pathan took the next two wickets of Mohammad Rafique (4) and Talha Jubair off consecutive deliveries to increase the hosts’ misery at 312/9. The last man Nazmul Hossain was run out for a duck as Bangladesh were bowled out for 333 runs in the first innings. Ashraful, who holds the record of being the youngest player in the history of Test cricket to score a century, today hit his second ton off 125 balls with the help of fifteen fours and two sixes. Ashraful’s unbeaten knock of 158 runs today was the only sparkling gem in the Bangladesh innings. Falling just seven runs short of the follow-on mark, Bangladesh were asked to follow-on by the Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly. It was then Pathan’s show all over. The Bangladeshis hardly seemed have recovered from his destructive spells in the previous Test and here he was at them again. Pathan first trapped Nafis Iqbal in front of the wicket on the first ball of the second innings, then dismissed Javed Omar (6) and Ahmed (4) in his fourth over. Pathan then had Rafique (22) caught by Sehwag and then again dismissed Bashar (17) with his trademark delivery that swings into the right hander, to complete his third five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Kumble took over from there dismissing Rana (0) and Ashraful (3) in successive overs. Harbhajan struck in the next over having Mashud (0) caught at first slip by Dravid. Ganguly brought in Sachin Tendulkar in the attack and he responded by dismissing Mortaza (6). In 21.3 overs, Bangladesh were reeling at 84/9. With Bangladesh still trailing by 89 runs, India need just one wicket to wrap up the Test and pocket the series 2-0. in-depth coverage > Indian Cricket Team's Bangladesh Tour > |
