India tighten grip over Chittagong Test
18.02 IST   18th Dec 2004

By Manish Kumar

India tightened their grip on the second Test taking three Bangladeshi wickets after their batsmen posted a huge total on the board on the second day at MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong on December 18.

At Stumps on Day Two, the home side was tottering at 54/3 in their first innings after India were all out for 540 runs in their first essay.

But the day started on a poor note for India as Sachin Tendulkar (36) was out on the first ball of the day, trapped plumb in front of the wicket by an incoming delivery off Mashrafe Mortaza.

Indian vice-captain Rahul Dravid completed his 150 but got out ten runs later caught behind by keeper Khaled Mashud off Mortaza.

V V S Laxman hit two fours in his small score of 9 runs before giving Mohammad Rafique a return catch.

Rafique took two more wickets having both Dinesh Karthik (11) and Irfan Pathan (4) caught behind by Mashud.

From their overnight score of 334/3, India slumped to 412/7 in the first session of the day.

Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble added 53 runs for the eighth wicket to take the team’s score over the 450-run mark.

Kumble was stumped by Mashud off Mohammad Ashraful after scoring 23 runs.

Then the pair of Ganguly and Harbhajan Singh stepped on the accelerator scoring 75 runs in the next ten overs.

Ganguly scored 88 runs with the help of nine fours and was caught while attempting to clear the ropes by Talha Jubair off Rafique.

Harbhajan entertained one and all with his lusty hitting. In his typical style, Harbhajan scored 47 runs off just 43 balls with seven fours and two sixes. His was the last wicket to fall caught by Manjural Islam Rana off Nazmul Hossain.

Zaheer Khan did not get to face a ball as India were bowled out for 540 runs in their first innings.

Bangladeshi openers Nafis Iqbal and Javed Omar started off really well and negotiated Pathan and Zaheer putting up an opening stand of 48 runs, but once Kumble and Harbhajan were introduced, they crumbled under pressure.

Kumble struck first when he had Omar (10) caught at first slip by Dravid. Gautam Gambhir caught Nafis Iqbal (31) at forward short leg off Harbhajan Singh to reduce Bangladesh to 54/2.

Kumble struck in the next over when he trapped night watchman Mortaza (4) plumb in front of the wicket shouldering arms.

With three wickets already down and a deficit of 486 runs staring at them, Bangladesh look in ominous trouble, yet again.
