Indian opener Gautam Gambhir and vice-captain Rahul Dravid sent Bangladesh on a leather hunt hitting centuries on the first day of the second Test at MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong on December 17.Indian skipper won the toss again and chose to bat in ideal batting conditions, but Virender Sehwag missed out scoring just 10 runs. Playing away from his body to an outswinger, Sehwag gave Bangladesh skipper Habibul Bashar a simple catch at first slip. But Gambhir and Dravid from then on set on a run spree scoring their first and eighteenth Test centuries respectively. Gambhir was the aggressive of the two reaching his 50 off 60 balls with ten fours as India put 106 runs on the board before Lunch. Dravid reached his fifty in the second session of the day off 95 balls and Gambhir reached his maiden Test hundred in that session too in 131 balls with the help of 16 fours. When Tea was taken with India at 237/1, Dravid was on 99. ‘The Wall’ completed his eighteenth century after Tea to become the first batsman in the history of Test cricket to score a hundred in all Test playing countries. Dravid hit fourteen fours to reach his 18th Test ton. Gambhir was clean bowled by Nazmul Hossain in the 73rd over. The opener from Delhi scored 139 runs and his strokes through the off-side were impeccable. But Dravid went from strength to strength putting an end to his rare lean patch he went through in the home series against Australia and South Africa. At close of play, India were 334/2 with Dravid (145) and Sachin Tendulkar (36) at the crease. With Dravid and Sachin looking solid at the crease and Ganguly and V V S Laxman still to come, India would be looking to bat only once in this Test and post a score of around 600. in-depth coverage > Indian Cricket Team's Bangladesh Tour > |
