Pathan rocks Bangladesh at Dhaka
22.41 IST   10th Dec 2004

By Manish Kumar

Left arm fast bowler Irfan Pathan stole the thunder from Anil Kumble by grabbing his maiden five-wicket haul on the first day of the first Test between India and Bangladesh at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka on December 10.

Kumble became India’s leading wicket-taking bowler in Test cricket overtaking the great Kapil Dev. But it was Pathan who rocked Bangladesh by taking the first three wickets with just 29 runs on the board.

Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly put in Bangladesh to bat after getting lucky with the toss at last. The match started after a delay of about three hours due to wet conditions because of dew.

Pathan struck as early in the third over when he trapped Javed Omar (4) shouldering arms plumb in front of the wicket.

In the 9th over of the Test, Pathan struck twice off consecutive deliveries to send back Nafis Iqbal (20) and Rajin Saleh (0). Both were struck on their pads in front of the wicket by deliveries coming back into the right-hander. But Mohammad Ashraful denied Pathan what would have been his first hat-trick.

Pathan’s new ball partner Zaheer Khan struck next having Bangladesh skipper Habibul Bashar (8) caught at deep square leg by Sachin Tendulkar.

Khan then had wicket keeper Khaled Mashud (8) caught behind by Dinesh Karthik to reduce Bangladesh to 50/5.

But the talented Ashraful along with Manjural Islam Rana added 56 runs for the sixth wicket to lend some respectability to their team’s total.

Then Ganguly brought Pathan back in the attack and he responded by taking two wickets off two consecutive deliveries again. Pathan first had Rana (24) caught behind by Karthik and on the next delivery trapped Mushfiqur Rahman plumb in front of the wicket. That was the last ball of his over and in the next over, Ashraful again denied Pathan the chance to become only the second Indian to take a hat-trick in Test cricket.

It was then that Kumble took his record 435th wicket in his second spell. Kumble overtook Kapil when he dismissed Mohammad Rafique (47) leg before wicket. Rafique added 65 valuable runs with Ashraful for the eighth wicket.

Kumble also got a chance to claim a hat-trick when on the next delivery he had Tapash Baisya caught at first slip by Rahul Dravid. But Mashrafe Mortaza denied the leg-spinner another moment of glory.

Mortaza (7) was soon run out after a mix-up with Ashraful as Bangladesh were bundled out for 184 runs their first innings. Ashraful’s unbeaten knock of 60, with six fours, was the backbone of the Bangladesh innings.

Indian openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir did came out to bat in fading light, but were offered the light by umpires Aleem Dar and Jeremy Lloyds before a ball was bowled. And the batsmen were more than happy to accept the light and walk away.
