Ace leg spinner Anil Kumble today equalled Kapil Dev's decade old record of 434 wickets to become the joint highest wicket-taker for India in Test cricket. The 34-year old Kumble achieved the feat when he had South Africa's Makhaya Ntini caught by Rahul Dravid in slips for 12 to signal the end of South African second innings and set up an Indian victory on the fifth and final day. Kumble achieved the milestone in 90 Test matches whereas Kapil Dev had taken the same number of wickets in 131 Test matches. The legendary all-rounder had capped the feat in 1994. At the start of the second Test in Kolkata, Kumble was four wickets behind Kapil's record. While he could take just one wicket in the first innings, in the second, he took three to equal the record. The Bangalore bowler, who had started his Test career against England in Manchester in 1990, also has the distinction of being only the second bowler in Test history after Jim Laker of England to take all 10 wickets in an innings. He had achieved this remarkable feat against Pakistan in Delhi in 1998-99. Kumble also has 321 wickets in 259 one-day internationals at an average of 30.69. in-depth coverage > India-South Africa Test Series 2004 > |
