In the second disciplinary action against him by International Cricket Council in just over a fortnight, Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly was fined 30 per cent of his match fee for showing serious dissent against umpire Daryl Harper on the fourth day of the second Test against South Africa in Kolkata on Wednesday.ICC match referee and former New Zealand test player Jeff Crowe found Ganguly guilty of showing serious dissent to Harper and of breach of ICC code of conduct for players in a hearing held after the end of the day's play, an ICC press release said. Ganguly, Indian team coach John Wright and all the four umpires were present at the hearing. Ganguly was reported for making gestures at Harper who turned down an appeal for bat-pad catch against South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis in the Proteas' second innings. Television replays showed a thick inside edge from Kallis off Harbhajan Singh. "As Indian captain, with greater responsibility, the behaviour is unacceptable in maintaining the standard in international cricket," Crowe said. Ganguly was slapped with a two-Test ban for slow over rate of Indian team in the Indian cricket board's Platinum Jubilee one-day international against Pakistan at the Eden Gardens on November 13. The ICC later withdrew the ban following an appeal moved by the Indian captain. This was the third time in this year that Ganguly had to face disciplinary action for on-field behaviour. The first one had come during a one-day match in Australia. in-depth coverage > India-South Africa Test Series 2004 > |
