‘Turbanator’ on the prowl in Eden Gardens
23.38 IST   01st Dec 2004

By Manish Kumar

When it looked like the South Africans were running away with the Test with an opening stand of 77 runs, ‘Turbanator’ Harbhajan Singh took four wickets to bring India right back into the game.

South African openers skipper Greame Smith and Andrew Hall put up 77 runs in 23 overs till Harbhajan struck on the fourth day of the second Test at the Eden Gardens on December 1.

Thanks to Harbhajan, the Proteas had five wickets down with 172 runs on the board when bad light again stopped play on Day Four. With a lead of 66 runs, South Africa had Jacques Kallis (52) and Zander de Bruyn (9) at the crease.

Earlier, India resumed their first innings at the overnight score of 359/6 with Dinesh Karthik and Irfan Pathan.

Ntini took two of the four Indian wickets to fall on the day dismissing Pathan (24) and Anil Kumble (8).

Karthik scored 46 runs before Shaun Pollock trapped him plumb in front of the wicket. The young wicket keeper hit six fours in his knock.

The pair of Harbhajan and Zaheer Khan took the Indian score past 400-run mark before Justin Ontong had Harbhajan (14) caught by Boeta Dippenaar.

Zaheer remained not out on 11, as India were bowled out for 411 runs in their first innings, with a lead of 106 runs in hand.

The South Africans started their second innings aggressively with the skipper leading from the front scoring his first 12 runs in boundaries, all fours.

But Harbhajan provided the vital breakthrough for India when he dismissed Hall in the 24th over. Trying to sweep, Hall (21) gloved the ball up in the air and Karthik took a good catch diving forward.

In his next over, Harbhajan dismissed Jacques Rudolph (3) leg before with the ‘doosra’ bowling from round the wicket. Rudolph misread the delivery completely and was shouldering arms.

Smith then reached his first fifty against India, but 21 runs later, V V S Laxman took a stunning catch at first slip to dismiss the South African skipper. Smith pushed hard at a Harbhajan delivery, edged it over the slips but the tall Laxman at first slip jumped stretching his left hand fully to pluck the ball from thin air.

Test debutant Hashim Amla was unlucky to be given out adjudged caught at first slip by Laxman off Harbhajan. His bat hit the ground, the ball hit his pad, and went to Laxman and umpire Simon Taufel adjudged him out bat-pad.

Kumble took his 432nd Test wicket overtaking New Zealand legend Sir Richard Hadlee (431 Test wickets) when he dismissed Dippenaar (2), who edged the ball onto keeper Karthik’s pads and then it went to Sehwag, who was standing at second slip.

Though Kallis has stood like a rock and scored 52 unbeaten runs, he should consider himself lucky to be still there at the crease because he was out caught by Gautam Gambhir at forward short leg off Harbhajan before the Tea interval. The ball had clearly taken the edge of Kallis’ bat, then hit his pads and went into the hands of Gambhir, but umpire Taufel adjudged him not out.

Tomorrow being the last day, India would be looking to bowl out the South Africans as quickly as possible, before they can stretch their lead over the 100-run mark.
