Coach John Wright on Wednesday came in defence of Indian cricketers and said there was no excessive appealing by the hosts during the fourth day's play of the final Test against South Africa in Kolkata."I don't think we appealed excessively. Maybe on some occasions, the appeal was not necessary. Personally I like to see passion in the players, but that has to be controlled," Wright said. Captain Sourav Ganguly was summoned by Match Referee Jeff Crowe for a hearing after he was reported by the umpires for showing dissent when an appeal for bat-pad catch against Jacques Kallis was turned down by Daryl Harper in South Africa's second innings. Asked about the incident, Wright said "not that I am aware of it. I also saw that particular appeal on the television as you did." He, however, admitted that "there was a bit of emotion, but that has to be controlled." Asked if he was disappointed about some of the decisions by the umpires that went against India today, Wright said, "that is part and parcel of the game." in-depth coverage > India-South Africa Test Series 2004 > |
