Hard hitting opener Virender Sehwag today rejected his description in a section of the media saying that he is the best batsman in the Indian team.Sehwag feels that it was unfair to refer him as the best batsman in the Indian team under present circumstances. "It always sounds nice if someone refers to you as the best batsman in the team. But the fact is there are batsmen like Sachin, Dravid and Laxman, who are much better than me." "I don't think I am the best batsman in the team. At the best, may be.. 3rd or 4th number is mine," he said. Sehwag was talking to reporters in Kolkata after a press conference to announce auction of the gloves with which he scored triple century against Pakistan in Multan. Sehwag said his aim was to perform consistently and give a good start to the team instead of focussing on scoring a century. "My aim is to give a good start and a century does not matter and I will try to play my best innings at the Eden Gardens (in the second Test beginning against South African from Sunday)." Asked how it felt to score 1000 runs in a single year, the Sehwag said, "You have to perform as a batsman and perform consistently and just not remain content with scoring 1000 runs or centuries. I always aim to give a good start to the team." If the team could score at the rate of 3.5 or 4 in the first few hours in a Test Match without losing a wicket, then 40 or 50 scored at that time is of more value than scoring a century, he said. in-depth coverage > India-South Africa Test Series 2004 > |
