Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Shaharyar Khan strongly refuted allegations that matches of the recent India-Pakistan series had been fixed but struggled to explain charges of financial irregularities during the home series before a Parliamentary Committee here.Shaharyar, who appeared before the Senate Standing Committee on Sports in Islamabad yesterday, said the defeat in the one-day as well as the Test series against India in March-April this year was due to poor performance of the team and had nothing to do with match fixing. He said the performance of the Pakistan team was disappointing and fell short of the nation's expectation. The defeat was due to lapses in bowling, batting and fielding, he told the Committee. Shaharyar, a retired diplomat and former foreign secretary, said Pakistan narrowly lost to the Indian team which was billed as superior by eminent cricketers of the past, according to a report in local daily 'Dawn'. Denying allegations of match-fixing, he said the Anti- Corruption Unit of International Cricket Council as well as local agencies had confirmed the series was clean with no evidence of matches being fixed. He said the defeat had prompted the Board to hire Bob Woolmer as national cricket team coach.
