Sri Lanka beat India to win Asia Cup
22.59 IST   01st Aug 2004

By Manish Kumar

Let’s admit it. The kind of cricket that India played throughout the Asia Cup, they didn’t deserve to be in the final, let alone winning it. The team that deserved to win the tournament was Sri Lanka and that is what precisely happened at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on August 1.

Sri Lanka beat India by 25 runs in the final to be crowned the Asian Champions for the third time.

Chasing an easy victory target of 229 runs, India scored 203/9 in their 50 overs.

No Indian batsman other than Sachin Tendulkar crossed the 30-run mark. All the talk that came up during the Pakistan tour that ‘there are six-seven Sachin Tendulkars’ in the Indian team fell flat today.

There is only one Sachin Tendulkar in the Indian team and that Sachin showed his teammates how to play on a pitch where the ball was not coming onto the bat. The Maestro scored 74 runs off 100 balls with seven fours and a six.

Rest of the six specialist batsmen Virender Sehwag (5), Sourav Ganguly (4), V V S Laxman (12), Rahul Dravid (16), Yuvraj Singh (8) and Mohammad Kaif (5) never looked comfortable throughout their stay at the crease.

That the Sri Lankans were able to defend a low score of 228 runs was the result of some splendid bowling by their slow bowlers who were backed up by their superb agile fielders.

Earlier, winning the toss and electing to bat first, Sri Lankan skipper Marvan Atapattu top scored for his side with 65 runs.

Kumar Sangakkara scored 53 runs and the Indians conceded 32 extras as the Lankans scored 228/9 in 50 overs.

Atapattu was adjudged the Man of the Match for not only coming good with the bat but also because of marshalling his resources well. Sanath Jayasuriya was adjudged the Man of the Series.

India play their next tournament in Holland against archrivals Pakistan and world champions Australia.
