Miandad against foreign coach
22.31 IST   28th July 2004

By IndiaExpress Bureau

Former Pakistan cricket coach Javed Miandad today came down heavily on the present trend among sub-continent teams to employ foreign coaches for their national sides and regretted that indigenous talent was being ignored.

"I think these foreign coaches are unnecessary and cannot bring about much of a difference. Did Pakistan have a foreign coach when it won the World Cup in 1992?" Miandad asked during an interaction with mediapersons in Kolkata.

Miandad, who was here on the sixth lap of his eight-city tour as part of the 'Javed Aapke Shaher Main' show sponsored by Zee News, said a coach could succeed only if he had good players under his command.

At present, each of the leading sub-continent nations have coaches imported from abroad. Sri Lanka have reposed trust in Aussie John Dyson, India in Kiwi John Wright and Pakistan in England batsman Bob Woolmer. Even minnows Bangladesh have appointed Australian Dave Whatmore.

"Where were these foreign coaches earlier? Didn't the sub-continent sides do well then?" he asked.

Miandad, who was sacked as Pakistan coach and replaced by Woolmer, said the Pakistan Cricket Board was "so terrified" of the players, that they never dared to allow a free hand to home-grown coaches. "Ghar ki murgi dal barabar (local talents are never recognised)," he added.

"If you look at India, what changes have the foreign coach brought about? People like Irfan Pathan have come up on their own," he said.
