The 2007 Cricket World Cup will be played at eight venues in the West Indies from middle of February to April, International Cricket Council President Ehsan Mani announced in London on Monday.West Indies will be hosting the ninth edition of the one-day cricket extravaganza for the first time. The eight venues, chosen from 12 bids are -- Antigua, the Kensington Oval in Barbados, Queen's Park Grenada, Guyana, Sabina Park in Jamaica, Warner Park in St. Kitts and Nevis, Beausejour Stadium in St. Lucia and Queen's Park in Trinidad and Tobago. In two cases, new venues will be built with Antigua and Guyana set to play host to purpose-built 20,000 capacity stadiums. "In 2007 the ICC Cricket World Cup will be hosted for the first time in history by the West Indies and they have quite rightly earned this wonderful opportunity to showcase their region to the world," Mani said congratulating the chosen venues. He reconfirmed the cricket community's full support for the West Indies, the first World Cup winners back in 1975 in England and again in 1979 in England. A ninth venue, the National Sports Centre in Bermuda, has been awarded tournament warm-up matches and the West Indies Cricket Board will recommend it as first alternative venue to host the event if a match is needed to be relocated for any reason. in-depth coverage > Cricket World Cup 2003 > |
