The Pakistan Cricket Board abruptly terminated Miandad's tenure, which was to end in April 2005 and named former South African coach Bob Woolmer in his place. "His (Miandad's) contract has been terminated. We have convinced Bob Woolmer to take over as coach," PCB chairman Shahryar Khan told a press conference in Karachi. "We offered Miandad to serve as national cricket advisor but he has declined," the PCB chief said. Woolmer, who played for England, will join the Pakistan squad on July 2 before the team leaves for Sri Lanka for the Asia Cup from July 16 to August 1. "It was not easy to have a coach of Woolmer's status who is regarded as pioneer and highly respected but through negotiations we have asked him to take up the job until the World Cup 2007," Shaharyar said. Miandad's exit comes barely a month after the PCB had indicated that it would continue with his services despite the first ever series loss at home to India. in-depth coverage > India-Pakistan Cricket Series 2004 > |
