Shoaib left the ground on the third day of the all-important Test claiming to have injured his finger and pulling a side muscle. However, his quickfire 28 off just 14 balls the very next day took all, including his skipper Inzamam-ul Haq, by surprise. Later, Inzamam announced that the case, whether Shoaib feigned injury, would be looked into and the bowler would face punishment if proven guilty. According to media reports, Shoaib was taking it out on his skipper Inzamam-ul Haq after the latter had a tiff with team trainer Dr Tauseef Razzak who is also a friend of the "Rawalpindi Express." The incident subsequently saw the doctor refusing to come to Rawalpindi with the team and finally quitting the side. Shoaib has been very close to Dr Razzak. The doctor, in recent past, was in fact accused by other players of giving special treatment to the pacer. He was also instrumental in restoring Akhtar's fitness since joining the side in 2002. Dr Razzak had a heated argument with Inzamam during the Lahore Test because he felt the pacers were being overworked in the nets and that would result into burnout. However, an adamant Inzamam wanted the pacers to mend their line and length in the nets, especially after putting up an undisciplined show in the one-day series where they conceded 40-odd extra runs in all the matches. Dr Razzak claimed he was vindicated after Mohammed Sami, Umar Gul and Shabbir Ahmed sustained injuries even though Sami played in the final Test. Instead of working in the nets, he wanted the pacers to work out in the gym and Shoaib too was not keen to toil it out in the nets. Even the intervention of team manager Haroon Rashid and coach Javed Miandad could not solve the crisis. During the argument, Inzamam had told Dr Razzak to mind his business while the doctor alleged unnecessary interference in his work had resulted in the injuries to the pacers. in-depth coverage > India-Pakistan Cricket Series 2004 > |
