This Indian team is special. It has achieved what the past Indian teams were trying to achieve for the last 52 years, but couldn’t. The team becomes more special because they played this Test without their skipper Sourav Ganguly. Rahul Dravid indeed marshalled his resources very well.In the end it took just two overs on Day Five for India to register their first-ever Test win on Pakistan soil beating their arch foes by an innings and 52 runs in the first Test in Multan on April 1. Anil Kumble started the proceedings on Day Five when Pakistan resumed their second innings on the overnight score of 207/9 with Yousuf Youhana and Shabbir Ahmed. Five runs were conceded off that over, of which four were byes and a single was taken by Youhana to take strike in the next over to be bowled by Irfan Pathan. Youhana played a lovely drive to long off for four off Pathan in that over but the left arm seamer had the last laugh when he had Youhana caught by Dravid on the last ball. Youhana, trying to hook a short pitched delivery, edged it high up in the air for Dravid to take the catch. That sparked the celebrations and the Indian team got together in the huddle. Following on, Pakistan were bowled out for 216 runs in their second innings with Youhana top scoring for his side with a marvellous 112. Apart from Kumble who took six wickets in the innings, Pathan bowled tremendously. Though he got just two wickets in the second innings, the line and length he bowled throughout the Test must have done his idol Wasim Akram proud. Sehwag as adjudged the Man of the Match for his stupendous innings. The next Test starts in Lahore from Friday, with India leading the series 1-0, but Pakistan won’t just sit back. It will be looking to bounce back hard. But for now just enjoy and celebrate India’s first ever Test win on Pakistani soil. Chill. in-depth coverage > India-Pakistan Cricket Series 2004 > |
