Sachin Tendulkar became the first Indian to hit a ton on Pakistan soil in an ODI, the first batsman in the world to score 13,000 runs in ODI cricket, but India lost the second match of the series against Pakistan by 12 runs in Rawalpindi on March 16.Chasing a victory target of 330 runs, India were bowled out for 317 runs in 48.4 overs. The win enabled the Pakistanis to level the series 1-1. India lost Virender Sehwag (26) with 56 runs on the board and V V S Laxman, who was in terrific form in Australia, today failed with the bat, getting out for 4 runs. Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly scored 15 runs before getting stumped by Moin Khan off Shahid Afridi. With India at 140/3, Sachin and Dravid put up 105 runs for the fourth wicket with Sachin marching towards his ton. Sachin stood like a colossus in India’s reply as no other Indian batsman reached even a fifty. When Sachin reached 51 with a flick off Mohammad Sami for a single, he reached 13000 runs in ODI cricket. When the Genius smashed his 37th hundred it was the first occasion that an Indian had hit a century on Pakistan soil in ODI cricket. Sachin played every Pakistani bowler magnificently and also derailed ‘Rawalpindi Express’ at his home ground. Sachin hit Shoaib out of the attack during his partnership with Dravid when the tearaway fast bowler came to bowl in his second spell. The target of 350 looked gettable as long as Sachin was at the crease but after scoring 141 runs off 135 balls with seventeen fours and a six, the Maestro was caught at deep mid-wicket by Abdul Razzaq off Shoaib Malik. Though the other Indian batsmen Dravid (36), Yuvraj Singh (19) and Mohammad Kaif (7) tried hard, they were dismissed while trying to accelerate the scoring. The surprise package for the Indians was the batting of debutant Ramesh Powar (18) and Laxmipathy Balaji (14), who looked like batsmen to take India to victory with their lusty hitting. But that was not be as India lost the match by 12 runs. Sachin was adjudged the Man of the Match. Earlier, Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq won the toss and elected to bat. Afridi, making his comeback in the Pakistani team, hit a fiery knock of 80 runs, while his opening partner Yasir Hameed top scored for his team with 86 as Pakistan went on to score 329/6 in their 50 overs. For the Indians, Ashish Nehra was the pick of the bowlers taking three wickets but it is becoming a matter of concern as the Indian bowlers are regularly allowing the opposing teams to score in excess of 300. Sachin was adjudged the Man of the Match. The third match of the series is in Peshawar on Friday. in-depth coverage > India-Pakistan Cricket Series 2004 > |
