Mani can resolve contract dispute: Dalmiya
21.00 IST   17th July 2003

By IndiaExpress Bureau

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Jagmohan Dalmiya has said the vexed World Cup contract dispute could be resolved by the new ICC chief Ehsan Mani who has shown a far more "pragmatic attitude" to the issue which could have been avoided in the first place.

Dalmiya said the elevation of Mani has raised hopes of a solution to the issue which had not been handled in the right way by the former ICC chief Malcolm Gray who had a "different working method".

"(Ehsan) Mani has now put the matter on the right track. It could have been sorted out earlier but it did not happen. I know him personally and I am sure he will do what is in the best interest of cricket," Dalmiya told ESPN-Star Sports in an interview to be telecast tonight.

Asked whether the change of guard in the ICC would help in resolving the contract dispute in the next few months, Dalmiya said "I don't subscribe to the view that a change of guard makes any difference. What is important is what kind of a man he is. Whether he understands the subject or not. Whether he has the answers or not. But I am sure it will now move in the right direction".

Dalmiya said that he had worked with Mani during the 1987 and 1996 World Cups and knew his method of working. "He is very pragmatic in his approach and it is a welcome change. I think he will be able to achieve it".
