‘Little Master’ stands between World Cup and Australia: Warne
19.11 IST   22nd Mar 2003

By IndiaExpress Bureau

Spin wizard Shane Warne says that “Little Master” Sachin Tendulkar is the “only thing” which stands between Australia and the World Cup.

“There is only one thing that stands between Australia and back-to-back World Cups and that is the Little Master Sachin Tendulkar,” said Warne, who was forced to go home after a positive drug test.

Warne has admitted that the Indian batting maestro gave him nightmares.

The champion spinner lists numerous reasons to support his belief.

“Sachin is, and has been in my time, the best batsman in the world. He is savage on the quicks if they stray with their line and length and he can dominate and intimidate the spinners.”

Warne thinks "it has always been a challenge and privilege" to bowl to him. He wrote this in the 'Herald Sun'.

Warne said Australia should first try to test Tendulkar with "fast, hostile, short-pitched deliveries to see if he wants to try to hook. Binga, “the blonde bombshell” Brett Lee, will be crucial here.

"Binga (Lee) could be just the man to knock over the maestro and intimidate the rest of the Indian batting line-up thus bringing the Cup back to Australia."

"Knowing Sachin the way I do, he loves the big occasion and will probably duck them while he sums up the conditions. Then again, he might try to make a statement and take the Aussies on," Warne said.

"It will be fascinating viewing," the Aussie spinner said.
