19.52 IST   21st Mar 2003

By IndiaExpress Bureau

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Friday wished the Indian team good luck, saying that the country was waiting for them to bring back the World Cup after a gap of 20 years.

In a letter to skipper Sourav Ganguly, Mr. Vajpayee said: “I join the countrymen in wishing good luck to you and your team.”

The letter will be delivered by Sports Minister Vikram Verma who is flying to Johannesburg for Sunday’s final against Australia.

The Prime Minister also signed a ‘good luck’ bat for the team, which had the message “I pray to God that India emerges victorious at the World Cup.”

The Prime Minister’s message was made available to mediapersons by the Sports Minister who also wished the team good luck.

“We hope we win the Cup back after a gap of 20 years,” Mr. Verma said.

Though the Prime Minister was inclined to go to South Africa for the finals, he had to give up the idea in view of the international developments.
