Australians are not invincible: Ganguly
16.37 IST   21st Mar 2003

By IndiaExpress Bureau

Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly on Friday fired the first salvo in the psychological war against their opponents in the World Cup final, Australia, saying that the defending champions are not invincible.

India, Ganguly asserted, had good chance of dethroning the Kangaroos when the two sides clash in the final on Sunday.

Ganguly seemed confident of exploiting the chinks in the armor of the defending champions.

"Every team has a bit of weakness. The top order of Australia has scored heavily in the last six-seven months.

"But if we can get them out early, it does expose the middle a bit," Ganguly said as India thrashed Kenya by 91 runs in the semi-final to earn a berth in the World Cup final after a 20-year lapse.

Stressing that it would be "wrong to write off India's chances", Ganguly said he could not wait to find out if Australia were really the best one-day team in the world.

"We will find out on Sunday if Australia is the best side in the world. There is no reason why we cannot beat them," said the Indian skipper who led from the front with an unbeaten 114 ball 111 in the semi-final under lights at the Kingsmead Stadium in Durban.

"We are the only side to have beaten them before and stopped their winning run in the Tests. Of course we have to play really well to beat them and similarly they need to be at the top of their game to beat us," said Ganguly, who is in an upbeat mood on having reached the World Cup final.
