Injured Damien Martyn doubtful for World Cup final
16.36 IST   21st Mar 2003

By IndiaExpress Bureau

Australia's Damien Martyn, who fractured his finger in the match against Sri Lanka, may not make it to the final of the World Cup final against India on Sunday.

But the gritty Australian but the middle-order batsman is trying his level best to be fit for the big occasion as he is keen on being part of the drama unfolding on the pitch on March 23.

The 31-year-old Martyn fractured his finger during the final Super Six game against Sri Lanka at Port Elizabeth on Tuesday. The swelling has come down but it is still painful.

Martyn will have to go for a fitness test on the eve of the final. But he made it clear that he would play only if he was hundred percent fit.

In case he decides to play, he would be playing with a splint on his finger. And he may have to take pain-killers too.

Martyn, who has scored 235 runs at an average of 47 in this tournament, is desperate to play in the final, having missed selection in Australia's Cup winning XI four years ago in England.

But he would be taking a big risk as another nasty hit on the finger could put him out of the match. When he grips a bat, his sore finger rests on the front of the handle, making it highly vulnerable to taking such blows.

Australian team physiotherapist Errol Alcott thinks that Martyn has some chance of playing. But he would have to wear a splint. "That's in the pipeline," Alcott said.
